Laurel Johannesson explores physical tension and the psyche through photographic-based collages that alter coastlines and beaches into limbo-like spaces. Her work often takes place in or around water in site-specific locations and depicts uncanny juxtapositions between body and nature, realism and dream. Within her images, Johannesson reinterprets our understanding of what it means to inhabit a liminal space and how photography can break down the barriers of physical reality in favour of a psychological landscape. Her current series, 'Situations,' reveals figures in various poses in remote landscapes that veer between dream, myth, and memory. The remote landscapes offer a stage to address the relationships between possibility and limitation, solitude and expanse. The images evoke a sense of displacement and a desire to find a resting place in a world that seems increasingly fractured by anxiety and uncertainty.
A large part of her practice is devoted to documenting and altering enigmatic landscapes that seemingly exist beyond the scope of reality. Johannesson works across various mediums, including photography, digital collage and painting, as well as moving image and interactivity to create imagery that addresses our understanding of time and space. ‘It's not the end of the world’ will feature work produced over the past five years, with a focus on ongoing photographic images, lightboxes, and new moving image works from the ‘Situations’ series.

“Through the vast sea of being and each one
With instinct given, that bears it in its course”
–Dante Alighieri, “Divine Comedy,” Paradise (Paradiso), Canto I
As far as modernity will allow us to look back, there are relatively few frames of comparison to which we can measure our current moment. The sea has always stretched out before us, providing reprieve in the form of new possibilities, whether imagined or based in reality.
A reprieve from our current stillness, Transatlantico reminds us of the value inherent in connection, exchange, and ultimately—understanding.
A collaboration between Mana Contemporary and Palazzo Monti, Transatlantico celebrates two dynamic artist communities, reinforcing the value of cultural exchange across border, region, and experience. The exhibition is curated by Edoardo Monti, founder of the exhibition’s namesake residency based in Brescia, Italy.
Transatlantico thematically traces the typical maritime journey of the transatlantic ocean liners for which it is named, through the collection and unification of disparate material culture, carried to a determined destination. A cultural bridge, the exhibition expands on the roles of each institution as loci for cultural, artistic, and intellectual connection.

Visible Invisible
Visible Invisible (2020) is a 3D animated version of The Oblivion Seekers 13 (2017) and is produced for Herringer Kiss Gallery's INISOLATION project. The Oblivion Seekers series has always been about occupying a kind of limbo space. It is an in-between space of protracted temporality that I'm interested in revealing. The Oblivion Seekers are searching for a space where time is suspended, where they can hover in limbo, and temporarily push memory and knowing into oblivion. In our current state of limbo and isolation, this series of work has been constantly on my mind. If you look carefully, you can see some socially distancing “seekers” on a faraway shore. The only thing separating you… the distance ...and the visible / invisible entities that you must carefully navigate your way through.
Visible Invisible is available for free as part of Herringer Kiss Gallery's INISOLATION project.

Pazzo Palazzo
“All day long in the hard reverie of stone and sea” is off to Italy and will be shown in the exhibition “Pazzo Palazzo.”
"Pazzo Palazzo" opens Saturday, May 18th at Palazzo Monti from 6-9pm, with a live performance at 7:30 pm by Fabio Tavares. The exhibition is curated by Edoardo Monti, founder of Palazzo Monti and contributing writer at Vogue magazine. The show runs through June 22, 2019.
I began the "Tondi per Palazzi" series of work during the time I spent living and working at Palazzo Monti in the winter of 2017. This magical palazzo and the time I spent there absorbing its aura continues to influence and affect my studio practice.
…and this series of work continues on.
Following the exhibition, “All day long in the hard reverie of stone and sea” will also become part of Palazzo Monti’s permanent collection.

Palazzo Monti Residency in Italy
During November and December 2017, Laurel will be Artist in Residence at Palazzo Monti, based in Brescia, Italy. The Palazzo is an incubator for creativity and productivity, offering artists a chance to find inspiration, forge new relationships, and create collaborations. Built in the XIII century, the residence is located a short distance from Milan, Venice, and Florence, offering resident artists the chance to visit culturally rich cities for research and inspiration. Decorated with Neoclassical frescos from the late 1750s, the Palazzo provides an inspiring setting to create contemporary art. The selection committee is based in New York and anonymously votes for the participation of each artist. The Council consists of professionals working in various museums including the Guggenheim, Whitney, Jewish Museum, and Cooper Hewitt, …and companies such as Instagram, Artsy, Twitter, and Tumblr. The Palazzo is owned by the Monti family and the residency conceived of by Edoardo Monti who is an art lover…as well as Stella McCartney’s PR manager in New York. Laurel is honoured to have been awarded a residency and will spend her time at the Palazzo working on a new and complex project.
